Aguma Banks Ibrahim: Building the Apple of Africa

Building the Apple of Africa
By Aguma Banks Ibrahim - Founder, Sanaa Co.

There was a moment - not a metaphorical moment, a real one - where the money was completely gone.

No runway. No safety net. No investor on the line. Just me, a vision that felt too big for Kampala, and a choice: walk away or find another way.

I stayed.

Not because I had a plan. I stayed because I had already seen what was possible, and I could not unsee it. Once you've imagined what African commerce, African media, and African finance could look like if they were built with the same obsession Apple brings to a product launch - you can't go back to small thinking.

That's the thing about building something real. The hardest days aren't the ones where everything breaks. The hardest day is the one where you have nothing left and you still believe.

It Started With a Printer

Not a metaphor. An actual printer.

In 2018, I started Sanaa Media on Nasser Road — the heartbeat of Kampala's printing and branding world. Every day I watched small business owners walk in with big dreams and walk out with designs that didn't do those dreams justice. They deserved better. They deserved world-class.

I decided to build it for them.

What started as one machine became a media company. The media company revealed a bigger problem: the sellers we were designing for had no proper place to sell online. So we built Soko 24 — East Africa's marketplace that never sleeps. Then the sellers on Soko 24 needed access to capital and financial tools. So we built Sanaa Finance.

One problem led to another. Every solution revealed a gap. That's how ecosystems are born - not from a master plan, but from relentless attention to what people actually need.

Why Africa Deserves Its Own Apple

Apple didn't just build products. They built a religion around the idea that technology should be beautiful, intuitive, and human. Every detail mattered. Every pixel was a decision.

Africa has brilliant engineers, fearless entrepreneurs, and 1.4 billion people whose daily commerce, media, and finance needs are still being served by tools built for someone else's context. Tools that don't understand our languages, our markets, our hustle, or our rhythm.

Sanaa Co exists to change that.

Not by copying the West. By building something unapologetically African - rooted in Kampala, scaled across the continent, and good enough to make the world pay attention.

Soko 24 is not Amazon for Africa. It's something better - a marketplace that understands that a seller in Nakawa and a buyer in Nairobi operate differently from a seller in Ohio. Sanaa Finance is not a clone of a Silicon Valley fintech. It's a financial layer built for the SACCOs, money lenders, and small traders that have been powering African economies for decades without proper tools.

When I say I'm building the Apple of Africa, I mean this: I want every product we ship to feel like someone cared deeply about the person using it. That standard doesn't lower because we're in Kampala. It raises.

What Drives Me

I'll be honest - it's not one thing.

I want financial freedom. I want to prove, definitively, that world-class technology can be built from Uganda. I want the mama mboga with a smartphone to have the same access to digital commerce tools as a retailer in London. And I want to leave something behind that outlasts me - a company, a movement, a proof of concept for the next generation of African builders.

Those four things aren't in conflict. They're the same mission viewed from different angles.

What's Being Built Right Now

Soko 24 is growing into the commerce layer for East African sellers - digital storefronts, integrated payments, logistics, and now Soko Studio: a design and ad creation tool built specifically for our sellers, so they can create professional marketing without needing a graphic designer or a Canva subscription priced in dollars.

Sanaa Finance is becoming the operating system for SACCOs, MFIs, and money lenders across the region - the software they've needed for years but nobody built for them.

And Antigravity - our AI ops agent - watches over all of it, so the infrastructure that powers thousands of businesses never sleeps, even when I do.

A Message to Every Builder Reading This

You don't need permission to build something great on this continent.

You need conviction. You need the willingness to stay on the days the money runs out. And you need to care - genuinely, obsessively- about the people you're building for.

The Apple of Africa won't come from a press release or a pitch deck. It'll come from a thousand quiet nights of building, testing, failing, and building again.

I'm still in those nights. And I wouldn't trade them for anything.
