Savings and Credit Co‑operative Organisations (SACCOs) are a lifeline for many Ugandan and East African families, providing access to savings and credit where banks are scarce. Yet many SACCOs still rely on paper ledgers and cash boxes or depend entirely on the big mobile money networks run by MTN and Airtel. Fees and manual processes eat into members’ savings and limit the scale of operations.
Digital finance has already shown what is possible. Mobile platforms such as MoKash, Airtel Wewole and PostBank’s Wendi provide instant loans and savings products to millions of small business owners, farmers, students and informal workers. With mobile phone penetration exceeding 70 percent in Uganda, these apps have become the first port of call for urgent financial needs and are driving financial inclusion.
A new generation of digital SACCOs is emerging to harness these technologies. For example, ITAM SACCO describes itself as a digital cooperative that leverages technology to offer savings and credit services more conveniently than traditional SACCOs while instilling a culture of saving and supporting entrepreneurship. By using online portals and mobile apps, digital SACCOs can automate member onboarding, contributions and loan applications, improving transparency and accountability.
Going digital also reduces dependence on MTN and Airtel. By integrating multiple payment gateways and issuing smart cards or digital wallets, SACCOs can provide members with more choice and lower transaction costs. Members can transfer funds, make purchases or withdraw cash without being tied to a single network. This competition breaks the monopoly and fosters innovation.
Sanaa’s ecosystem is designed to support this transformation. Sanaa OS offers secure member management, digital wallets and smart contracts for automated loan agreements and repayments. Soko 24 connects cooperatives to markets for buying and selling goods, while Sanaa Media provides marketing and financial literacy tools to attract and educate members. By combining these services, SACCOs can offer buy‑now‑pay‑later products, source better markets and promote their brands.
Embracing technology will help SACCOs level up. It will open new markets across the East African Community, reduce reliance on telecom giants, and empower communities with transparent, efficient financial services. The future belongs to digital cooperatives that harness the power of technology to serve their members and build inclusive prosperity.
